Bell and Ross: BR03-92 Bi Compass

BELL & ROSS DELIVERS ITS LATEST NOVELTY THAT IS ONCE AGAIN INSPIRED BY ANALOG AIRCRAFT INSTRUMENTATION

For almost three decades, Bell & Ross has made its signature square watches – inspired by analog aircraft instruments – its distinct calling card in the world of horology. The results speak for themselves with models that are easily recognisable from afar, some of which have become iconic timepieces in the eyes of collectors. This year, the watchmaker continues with its motif with a new novelty, which takes inspiration directly from the aesthetics of avionics instruments used in military aircraft.

Compass Chic

The Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Bi-Compass takes its que from a vintage radio compass commonly used in military planes. The watchmaker once more utilises its trademark ‘circle-in-a-square’ design to great effect by compartmentalising the dial with three distinctive circles. The centrepiece of the dial is undoubtedly ultra-light hour disc in the middle, which replaces the traditional hour hand.
The outer ring features a ten-minute interval display with the inner circle holding the inner minute and seconds track. Here, designers have afforded the dial with a step with an inner flange to give it more depth and improved readability. A date window is positioned unobstructed between the hours of four and five.

Mechanically Sound

Beneath the 42mm black ceramic case is the BR-CAL.302 with hours, minutes, seconds and date indication. The tried-and-tested automatic movement is equipped with a 38-hour power reserve. Water resistant to 100m, the overall look of the BR 03-92 Bi-Compass is made complete with a black rubber as well as an ultra-resilient black synthetic fabric, to ensure optimum wearability and durability. The timepiece is limited to 999 units worldwide.

Form & Function

Utilitarian and stylish are factors not commonly associated with one another, but Bell & Ross designers have always managed blend both amazingly well. The BR 03-92 Bi-Compass is proof of that as it comes with sections, gradients and colours that not only complement the overall design but also provides better eligibility at a glance. The dial for instance is made of black matte ceramic, which offers strong anti-glare properties.

The centre dial features a triangle pointer to indicate the hours, which are all coated with a blue-green Super-LumiNova, for better readability for both day and night. The seconds and minutes as well as hands are treated with an off-white Super-LumiNova, which reportedly is colour scheme favoured on instruments of U.S. Navy aircraft. Its sapphire crystal also features an anti-reflective coating, which ensures excellent readability at all times.
