WHEN THE WORLD OF WATCHES AND PROFESSIONAL SPORTS COLLIDE, THE RESULTS ARE SIMPLY GAME CHANGING

The relationship between timepieces and sports stretch beyond the confines of just being timing instruments. Over the years, watch brands have begun embracing the world of professional sports in numerous ways.

This includes the creation of special edition models as well as commemorative pieces. However, some watch brands have taken it a step further by tapping into the world of sports by creating specific models inspired by the events, leagues and even teams. These are some examples of watches that have taken their connection to sports to new and extremely stylish heights.

Countdown to the Olympics

As the official timekeeping partner of the games since 1932, Omega has released numerous ‘Olympic’ editions that have encapsulated the spirit of the games in truly stylish form. Ahead of next year’s 2020 Summer Olympics, the brand has unveiled the Seamaster Planet Ocean, which pays homage to the nation hosting the Olympics. The Seamaster Planet Ocean arrives with a white ceramic face and bezel with matching strap with the seconds hand featuring a varnished red dot that pays homage to the Japanese flag. Limited to just 2020 pieces, the 39.5mm timepiece is powered by the Omega Master Chronometer Calibre 8800 movement and features the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games emblem on the case back.

Pedal to the Metal

TAG Heuer and the McLaren racing team have enjoyed a successful partnership that dates back 30 years. To commemorate that relationship, the Swiss watch brand created the TAG Heuer Formula 1 chronograph, a limited edition piece inspired by the iconic racing team. The timepiece cuts a striking look, thanks to its red aluminium bezel –complete with McLaren engraved on it – and an opaline black dial and a complementing colour-coordinated NATO strap. The quartz powered chronograph is equipped with a 42mm stainless steel case, which features a case back engraved with the championship MP4-winning race car from 1985.

Club Chic

Maurice Lacroix inked a deal to become the official watch partner of FC Barcelona in 2014. As a result of that partnership, the watch maker released several timepieces inspired by the world renowned Catalan club. The 40mm FCB Eliros Chronographe is just one shining example of that connection, featuring a clean, aesthetically pleasing dial with a large date display at 12 o’clock and the logo of FC Barcelona dominating the small seconds at 3 o`clock. Featuring a Swiss quartz movement, the stainless steel watch is completed with a NATO fabric strap in the colours of the La Liga club.

Pure Endurance

Oris and the Audi Sport endurance team enjoyed a tremendously successful partnership from 2014 to 2016, the years when Audi was dominating the FIA World Endurance Championship. Although the German automaker left the WEC in 2017, the spirit of that collaboration lives on in several highly innovative ‘Audi Sport’ limited edition watches. The Oris Audi Sport is a prime example of that partnership, especially with its unique racing-inspired functions. The automatic winding chronograph features three subsidiary dials for continuous seconds, 30 minutes and 12 hours counter as well as a date window, date corrector, fine timing device and stop-second. Housed within the 44mm titanium case beats an automatic winding chronograph.

Shooting Hoops

As the official timekeeper for the NBA, Tissot has produced timepieces that have paid homage to the league as well as the teams that play in it. However for female fans of the world renowned American basketball league, the Tissot PRC 200 NBA Special Edition is the best way to mark that allegiance. Bringing together a classic aesthetic with some stylish NBA-themed design codes, the timepiece features a stainless steel 35mm case, white dial with sub-dials with 60 second, 30 minute and 1/10th of a second displays. Powered by an ETA Caliber G15.211, Swiss quartz movement, the watch features a solid case back with an engraved NBA logo.
