GEMSTONES AND PRECIOUS METALS CAN ELEVATE A TIMEPIECE TO NEW LEVELS OF STYLE AND LUXURY, BUT THEY ALSO ADD A NEW DIMENSION THAT GOES BEYOND JUST INTRINSIC VALUE

The use of gems, precious stones and metals in watchmaking dates back centuries. In fact the worlds of fine jewellery and watchmaking have overlapped each other in stylish form, resulting in the creation of some truly exceptional pieces, most of which have gone on to increase in value.

The marriage of jewellery making techniques and horology has always been a harmonious one as it has allowed watch brands to enhance the value and luxurious appeal of some of its models. It has also allowed watchmakers to showcase their abilities in effectively using gemstones and precious metals to add a new aspect to their designs. Some recent editions have exemplified that in luxurious form.

Piaget Extremely Lady

With its 27mm stylish oval case made with 18k rose gold and set with 24 brilliant-cut diamonds, the Piaget Extremely Lady is the quintessential jewellery watch. The latest iteration of this timeless classic arrives with a natural carnelian dial, a finely-crafted 18k gold bracelet and is powered by an in-house 56P quartz movement. The beauty of the watch is that it boasts a design that hasn’t changed much since the 1960s. Even then it was a preferred timepiece for style icons like former U.S. First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who famously owned a model fitted with a jade dial.

Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Exo Tourbillon Minute Chronograph

Arguably one of the most unique timepieces made in recent years, the Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Exo Tourbillon Minute Chronograph combines a chronograph and a revolutionary tourbillon with a stop-seconds mechanism. It’s a stunner no doubt, enhanced impeccably by a column-wheel, vertical clutch and two off-centre sub-dials framed within the 44mm 18k red gold case. But Montblanc managed to up the ante so to speak by creating a limited edition model that paid tribute to legendary explorer Vasco De Gama. The super exclusive model came with an aventurine dial along with a version that had a sparkly diamond set bezel.

Panthère de Cartier

Although the Tank and Santos has been synonymously linked to Cartier, ladies will no doubt find the Panthère equally, if not, more appealing. Sporting a similar and signature square case with a bezel fitted with eight small screws and a classic flat white dial with Roman numerals, the quartz-powered watch is another timeless icon at the Maison Cartier. Offered in 22mm and 27mm sizes in a wide range of cases including steel, rose gold and yellow gold, Cartier has also several high-jewellery editions as well including versions with diamond set bezels as well as glittery diamond straps.

Blancpain Women Jour Nuit

A perfect representation of the fine watch making talents of Blancpain, the Women Jour Nuit is equipped with two retrograde indications set against an exquisite mother-of-pearl dial. To ensure optimal readability, the timepiece is noticeably larger compared to other women’s watches with a 40mm dial but is nevertheless remarkably slim with a height of just 12mm. But the sheer appeal of the Women Jour Nuit timepiece is its mesmerising details. The day-night disc features a sun and moon made from yellow sapphire and diamonds respectively along with a total of 14 diamonds to represent the stars as well. The bezel is framed by two rows of diamonds, numbering 140 in total.

TAG Heuer Aquaracer Lady Calibre 9 Automatic

The Aquaracer has always been a symbol of sporty femininity, but now it’s also received a touch of glamour by the watchmakers at TAG Heuer. Joining the family is a new Aquaracer Lady featuring a dial set with eleven 1.4mm diamonds. The addition of the precious stones further flatters the model, matching perfectly well with the 32mm case and unidirectional rotating bezel with beautifully polished lugs. The watch is available in various versions, with an option between a black or white mother-of-pearl dial for a more distinctive contrast of styles.
