Cinematic legends and their timepieces of choice

Film stars love their watches. In fact, the love affair between the biggest stars of Tinseltown and timepieces stretches back to the golden era of Hollywood. So, with the 90th Academy Awards upon us, we decided to uncover the timepieces of choice for some of Hollywood’s most celebrated Academy Award winners. From screen legends to films most in-demand stars, we honour these screen legends and their beloved timepieces…

Audrey Hepburn

Fashion icon, multi-award winning actress and humanitarian, Audrey Hepburn is the quintessential Hollywood screen legend. With a background in ballet and theatre, Hepburn made the leap from stage to screen with minor roles in the early 50s before scoring her first big role in ‘Roman Holiday’ in 1953, which won her a Best Actress Oscar. Her roles in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ and ‘Sabrina’ soon after solidified her as a Hollywood style icon. Hepburn was often spotted with a Longines Dolce Vita, which certainly fit her flawless style.

Elizabeth Taylor

A name that needs little introduction, Elizabeth Taylor broke into Hollywood in 1942 and achieved instant stardom with her roles in ‘One Born Every Minute’ and ‘National Velvet’ in 1944. A two-time Academy Award winner for her roles in ‘Butterfield 8’ and ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ in 1960 and 1965 respectively, Taylor also drew headlines for her numerous marriages and her love for jewellery. Her taste for all things shiny reflected in her extensive watch collection, which included a Cartier diamond and onyx wristwatch and a Vacheron Constantin diamond and gold Lord Kalla bracelet watch, which was a gift from Michael Jackson.

Gary Cooper

Renowned as a quintessential leading man of American cinema, Gary Cooper spent 36 years in front of the camera starring in over 80 feature films. His charismatic performances on screen and natural acting abilities garnered him a pair of Academy Awards. His first Best Actor nod was for his leading role in ‘Sergeant York’ (1942) whilst the second was for ‘High Noon’ (1953), one of the finest Westerns ever made. Off camera, Cooper was considered a fashion icon of Hollywood, showing an appreciation for crafted clothing and fine timepieces. One of the actor’s favourites was the Cartier Tank Basculante.

Leonardo DiCaprio

It took six tries at the Academy Awards before Leonardo DiCaprio finally bagged that elusive statuette in 2016 for ‘The Revenant’. Considered to be one of the finest actors of this generation, DiCaprio burst on the scene in 1993 in ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’. Today, he is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s biggest and most influential stars as he pulls double duty honing his craft in front of the camera and championing action against climate change. The actor is also known for his fashion sense and his love for Armani suits and his TAG Heuer CARRERA Calibre, which he often dons.

George Clooney

The former star of ‘ER’ has certainly come a long way. Starting out in television, George Clooney is now one of Hollywood’s most powerful men. Actor, director, producer, screenwriter, activist, businessman and philanthropist, Clooney has had a hand in some of film’s best and brightest work. He also has two Oscars to his name, one for a supporting role in ‘Syriana’ (2006) and for co-producing ‘Argo’ (Best Picture-2013). An Omega ambassador since 2007, Clooney is often seen wearing the Omega Co-Axial Chronograph and Omega Master Co-Axial when he is out and about.

Cate Blanchett

From her humble beginnings at the Sydney Theatre Company, Cate Blanchett has gone on to become one of films’ most well-respected and in-demand actresses. A multi-award winner, Blanchett received the highest accolades in film on two occasions with an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress for the ‘Aviator’ (2005) and Best Actress for ‘Blue Jasmine’ (2014). A Friend of IWC Schaffhausen, the timepiece of choice for this talented thespian is none other than the IWC Portofino Automatic.
